petition
We, women living in Europe, unite to confirm our common values and call upon all Member States of the European Union to protect our human rights!

We affirm the right of everyone to adopt and follow a religion or belief of their choosing. But the beliefs of any group may never be used to limit the rights of others. Women's rights are often limited in name of religious values and beliefs, in particular their right to make personal decisions regarding sexuality and having children. States are responsible to protect and propagate all human rights, including sexual and reproductive rights.

A secular State is essential to ensure the neutrality of the State in matters of religion and belief, favouring no-one and discriminating against no-one.

We call upon all Heads of European Union Member States to confirm the neutrality of States and the protection of women's rights.

background
On the 25th of March 2007, all Heads of State of EU member states met in Berlin, organised by the German EU Presidency, to celebrate the 50st anniversary of the EU and to adopt the 'Berlin Declaration' about European Values. Apart from Angela Merkel (German Chancellor) and José Manuel Barosso (President of the EU) the other Heads of European Union Member States did not sign the Berlin Declaration in the end.
In the coming months Merkel wishes to set out a path towards a European treaty in which European Values will be discussed as well. So, we have to remain alert.

What are these 'European Values'? We believe they are not the values of a single culture, religion or tradition but are our shared values, the values that enable Europeans of all backgrounds, cultures, religions and traditions to live together in peace and harmony. We have stated this prior to the meeting on 25th of March and will continue to make this statement in the coming months. So please, continue to sign the petition and promote this campaign to mobilize the progressive voices in Europe. Read more
